Creative web development, done by one builder

Your search, knit into one hire. The estimator below is the argument.

A creative web developer who designs and codes in one head.

A creative web developer is one person who designs the thing and writes the code that runs it. Not a visual designer who hands a mockup to someone else. The same head that pictures the motion writes the shader that draws it. That is a specific hire, and it is what you searched for.

You probably don't want a definition. You want to know what one senior builder can actually deliver, and how to hand them a brief they can price. This page answers both. The estimator above turns a rough idea into a scope you can send me.

I'm David Weaver. I design, build, and deploy the whole thing myself — including the interactive WebGL loom on this site's homepage, which you can pull apart right now. One person answers the contact form too. No handoffs, no account manager between you and the person on the keyboard.

What does a creative developer do? — scope tool

Creative development is engineering with taste — interaction, performance, and narrative in one hire. Pick ambition and capabilities.

The homepage loom is the résumé. If you want a site that demos the craft while it sells, this is the column.

02

What one creative developer actually holds

The reason to hire a creative web developer instead of a designer plus a developer is that nothing gets lost in translation. There is no Figma file to interpret, no "that's not what I meant" after the build, no gap between the person with taste and the person with the compiler. Design decisions and engineering constraints get resolved in the same head, in real time.

That head carries three things at once: interaction and motion, the words on the page, and performance on a mid-range phone. Drop any one and the work stops being creative development — it becomes decoration, or a slow tech demo. I keep the headline as the first thing that loads, mount the spectacle after, and treat reduced motion as a designed state. The craft never costs you Core Web Vitals.

How to brief a creative web developer

The estimator reads these. Answer them and your brief is basically written:

  • The one thing a visitor must remember

Not a feature list — the single belief they leave with. Motion and interaction exist to make that belief stick. Without it, effects are confetti.

  • Where it lives and who maintains it

A new build, a hero grafted onto an existing site, or an ongoing product. Each scopes differently, and I need to know which one you mean.

  • The devices that actually matter

A hero that sings on a desktop and stalls on a three-year-old Android is a failure. Tell me where your real traffic comes from.

  • What already exists

Brand, copy, a codebase, half a design. Many commissions are surgical — one hero, one motion system, one AI feature — not a full rewrite.

  • The date and what it is tied to

A launch, a pitch, a campaign. A real deadline moves scope more than any single feature does.

What a creative build scales with

The estimator sorts a project into roughly these tiers. Scope sets the number, not headcount.

ScopeWhat you getWhat moves the price
One creative featureA hero, a motion system, or an AI feature grafted onto a site you already haveHow custom the interaction is, and how much of your stack it touches
A full marketing siteDesign, copy direction, build, and deploy — a site meant to be rememberedPage count, bespoke motion, and whether the brand exists yet
An interactive or WebGL pieceCustom shaders, 3D, or a scene the visitor can actually play withAsset budget, device targets, and how hard it leans on the GPU
A product or appSomething with state, accounts, or data behind it — not a brochureBackend surface, integrations, and how much has to be measured

Neighborhoods, not quotes. Run the estimator for a planning range; the real number is itemized and free.

05

How a commission runs, start to handoff

Written scope before any money moves. Staging URLs you can open on your phone inside the first week — no twelve-week black box. At the end you get the source and notes, so the next person isn't doing archaeology. I build from Columbus, Georgia and work with clients anywhere a video call reaches. The same person designs, codes, deploys, and answers your email.

Judge the craft before you spend a dollar. /work has live things you can open — a web product, a music project, and a national-bestselling novel — plus the homepage loom you can take apart with your cursor. If it can't survive you poking at it, it isn't proof.

Proof over promises

Open the work. Judge it live.

Straight answers

Asked often. Answered honestly.

What's the difference between a creative web developer and a web designer?
A designer makes the mockup; a developer builds it; a creative web developer is one person who does both. You lose the handoff — no translation gap between the taste and the code. For interactive or motion-heavy work, that gap is where most of the cost and disappointment hides.
Do I still need a separate designer if I hire you?
Usually no. I design the interaction and the motion and write the code that runs them. If you already have a brand or a designer you trust, I'll build to it. What I replace is the seam between design and engineering, not necessarily your visual identity.
Can one person really do design, motion, and engineering well?
For a solo or small-team scope, yes — that's the whole model here. For a large multi-stakeholder program with dozens of pages and a design system to staff, one person is the wrong tool, and I'll say so. The estimator above helps you tell which side of that line you're on.
How do I scope this before I contact you?
Answer the five questions in the brief list above and run the estimator. That turns "I want something cool" into a scope I can price. Send me the output with your brief and we start from a shared artifact instead of a vague call.
Will a creative, motion-heavy build wreck my page speed?
Only if it's built badly. The headline loads first and stays the LCP, heavy WebGL and video mount after, and reduced motion is a real designed state. The homepage loom on this site is the proof — interactive, and still fast on a phone.
Can you add one creative feature to a site I already have?
Often that's the best use of this hire. A single hero, a motion system, an AI feature, or a conversion rewrite grafted onto your existing codebase — surgical, not a rewrite. Tell me what's already there and I'll scope just the new part.
Is one creative developer cheaper than hiring a designer and a developer separately?
Often, because you aren't paying for the handoff — the meetings, the rework when the build doesn't match the mockup, the second contract. But scope drives the number, not headcount. Run the estimator for a planning range; exact quotes are itemized and free.

The estimator gave you a scope. Send it with a sentence about the outcome, and I'll reply with a written, itemized plan — from the person who will build it.
