The people finishing GTA 6 are now negotiating with Rockstar. A tribunal over 31 firings starts in September

The Rockstar Game Workers Union has moved from protests to a first formal meeting with the company, less than four months before Grand Theft Auto 6 ships. The dismissals that started it are still headed to an employment tribunal.

In May, Rockstar Games fans were waiting for a Grand Theft Auto trailer. What turned up instead, styled as exactly the video they had been waiting for, was an announcement that the people making the game had formed a union.

That was May 28, 2026 — six months to the day before Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to ship. Two months later, the Rockstar Game Workers Union has moved from public campaigning to the negotiating table: a first formal meeting with the company took place in July, and the union described it publicly as a step in the right direction that produced a roadmap.

Underneath that, unresolved, is the thing that started it. In October 2025, Rockstar dismissed a group of workers. The IWGB puts the figure at 31 of its members and says they were fired for trade union activity. Rockstar has pointed to gross misconduct and the sharing of confidential information about unannounced titles in a public forum. An employment tribunal is scheduled to begin hearing that case in September.

Those two accounts cannot both be right. Neither is reported here as fact, because the proceeding convened to decide between them has not sat yet.

What the union is and what it wants

The Rockstar Game Workers Union is organised under the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain, and covers staff across all five of Rockstar's UK offices — Edinburgh, London, Leeds, Lincoln and Dundee. Its stated demands are pay transparency, flexible working, and an end to crunch.

That last word carries most of the weight. Crunch — extended mandatory overtime in the run-up to a release — has been the games industry's defining labour argument for two decades, and Rockstar has been at the centre of it before. What is different this time is the mechanism. Previous rounds were journalism and public pressure. This one is a recognition process with a statutory route behind it.

Why the calendar matters

The union has asked Rockstar for voluntary recognition — the company agreeing to bargain without being compelled — and has said it will pursue the statutory recognition route if that is refused. Under UK law that second path exists precisely so an employer cannot end the question by declining to answer it, though it is slower and has its own thresholds.

Run the dates side by side and the shape of the next four months is obvious:

  • September 2026 — the employment tribunal on the October dismissals is scheduled to begin.
  • November 19, 2026 — Grand Theft Auto 6 ships on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Somewhere in between, a decision on voluntary recognition that has no announced deadline at all.

A recognition dispute is normally a slow, low-visibility process. This one has the most-watched consumer launch in the industry sitting on top of it.

Rockstar Games and the Rockstar Game Workers Union: what is settled, what is contested, what happens next

The state of the recognition campaign at Rockstar's UK studios as Grand Theft Auto 6 approaches release — separating what both sides agree happened from the claims an employment tribunal has yet to rule on.

Status: Recognition talks have begun; the tribunal over the October 2025 dismissals has not. As of July 26, 2026, Rockstar has not granted voluntary recognition, and Grand Theft Auto 6 is due in under four months.

Confirmed

  • The Rockstar Game Workers Union went public on May 28, 2026, with a video released in place of the Grand Theft Auto trailer fans were expecting — exactly six months before the game's scheduled release.
  • The union is organised under the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain and covers staff across all five of Rockstar's UK offices: Edinburgh, London, Leeds, Lincoln and Dundee.
  • Its stated demands are pay transparency, flexible working, and an end to crunch.
  • Rockstar dismissed a group of staff in October 2025. The IWGB puts the number at 31 of its members; the dismissals are the subject of an employment tribunal claim.
  • The union has asked Rockstar for voluntary recognition, and has said it will pursue the statutory recognition route if that is refused.
  • A first formal meeting between the union and the company took place in July 2026. The union described it publicly as a step in the right direction that produced a roadmap.
  • Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Not yet verified

  • ? Why the October 2025 dismissals happened. The IWGB says the workers were fired for trade union activity; Rockstar has pointed to gross misconduct and the sharing of confidential information in a public forum. These accounts cannot both be right, and the tribunal exists to decide between them.
  • ? Whether Rockstar will grant voluntary recognition. No decision has been announced either way.
  • ? What was actually agreed at the July meeting. The public characterisation comes from the union; the company has not published its own account, and 'a roadmap' has not been defined in public.
  • ? How many workers the bargaining unit would cover if recognition is granted, and on what terms.
  • ? Whether any of this affects the release schedule. Nothing announced connects the dispute to the game's date, and no party has suggested that it does.

How this is calculated

Items go in the confirmed list only where the parties agree or the fact is a matter of public record: the union's public launch, which studios it covers, that dismissals occurred in October 2025, that a tribunal has been convened, that a first formal meeting took place. Items go in the unconfirmed list where the parties' accounts conflict — above all the reason for the October dismissals, which is the question the tribunal exists to answer — or where a claim rests on one side's characterisation of a private meeting. Dates to watch are drawn from scheduled proceedings and announced release dates, not from speculation about what either side will do.

Assumptions, limitations & sources

Assumptions

  • · The dispute concerns Rockstar's UK operations and is proceeding under UK employment law and its statutory recognition process.
  • · Statements attributed to the union are the union's characterisation of events; statements attributed to the company are the company's.

Limitations

  • · This is a live legal matter. Nothing here is a finding about whether anyone acted lawfully — that is what the tribunal is for, and it has not ruled.
  • · Negotiations are private. What either side says about a meeting is that side's account, and both are recorded as accounts rather than as outcomes.
  • · Tribunal listings move. A hearing scheduled for September could be relisted, settled or withdrawn without a public announcement.
  • · Coverage of games-industry labour leans heavily on trade press and union statements. Where a fact could not be corroborated beyond one of those, it is not in the confirmed column.

The questions readers are asking

Is this Rockstar's first union? The first at the company, yes. The announcement in May was the point at which it became public.

Does this affect the GTA 6 release date? Nothing announced connects the two, and no party has suggested it does. The game remains scheduled for November 19, 2026.

What actually happened in October 2025? Workers were dismissed — that is not in dispute. Why is entirely in dispute, and that is the question the tribunal exists to answer. Anyone stating the reason as settled right now is picking a side, not reporting one.

What does recognition actually get workers? A legal obligation on the employer to bargain collectively with the union over pay, hours and holiday for the relevant group of staff. It does not by itself deliver any specific demand.

Has Rockstar refused recognition? No decision either way has been announced. The first formal meeting happened; recognition has not been granted.

Who is the IWGB? An independent British trade union that has organised in sectors traditionally difficult to unionise, including gig and outsourced work. The Rockstar union sits under it.

Is the union's account of the July meeting confirmed? It is the union's characterisation of a private meeting. Rockstar has not published its own account, and "a roadmap" has not been defined publicly. That is why it sits in the unconfirmed column of the tracker.

What happens next

Watch September. A tribunal hearing is the first point in this story where an independent body puts the competing accounts of October 2025 under oath, and its findings will shape the recognition question more than any press release will.

And watch what does not happen. If voluntary recognition is going to be granted, the useful moment for the company to do it is before a tribunal makes findings, not after. Silence between now and September is itself a decision.
